[Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card-hen] Episode 20 everyone's impressions

Episode 20
"Sakura, Rainbows, and Grandpa"

  • Oh my god Sakura just say it already!
  • I love that Syaoran didn't say "friend" or "classmate". Instead he introduced himself properly and thanked Misaki for the invitation.
  • I feel like this is the only time we'll see these two argue. And it was so damn cute!
  • Interesting choice of dialogue here. In the manga, Sonomi states that Misaki was interested in Syaoran because he's "the boy Sakura is going out with". I'm curious if this is an actual difference between the anime and the manga or just translation differences.
  • Loli Nadeshiko makes her appearance again!
  • Another interesting change... In the manga the projection by Record vanishes and is replaced by Angel Nadeshiko. Not really a big deal though since it's Nadeshiko's message is line per line the same.
  • If that's your family's formal attire, I think you need to start asking questions Akiho.
  • FINALLY ERIOL EXPLAINS EVERYTHING.... next week -_-

This episode covered Ch 20-21 almost panel by panel and a bit of Ch 22 for the part where Eriol shows up. I haven't read Ch 23 yet but as far as I know Chapter 24 won't come out until next month (or it's probably out and I just can't find the scans) so right now the anime is just one chapter behind the manga release.

Depending on how next week's episode will go, Episode 22 might either be a cliffhanger or an anime original ending. Either way I really hope they'll take a long break after this season because the animation quality these past few weeks have been subpar compared to the first 10-12 episodes.

≫Oh my god Sakura just say it already!

Ugh, I wish Syaoran introduced himself as her boyfriend though. Maybe in another lifetime.

≫I feel like this is the only time we'll see these two argue. And it was so damn cute!

It reminded me of the first season, except they're trying to compliment each other haha.

≫Loli Nadeshiko makes her appearance again!

Akiho seriously looks Nadeshiko, except her eyes are blue instead of green.

≫If that's your family's formal attire, I think you need to start asking questions Akiho.

Did they say her family was magical? Or just that they travel a lot and collect books. In any case, it's weird she saw the cloaked figured too if it was her... unless she was seeing the dream from Sakura's perspective since they're "syncronizing."

Ugh Eriol just spill the beans already.

≫Akiho seriously looks Nadeshiko, except her eyes are blue instead of green.

Also, was it me or do they share a VA?

they don't. Akiho's VA is Minori Suzuki and this is her first time voice-acting CCS. Nadeshiko's VA is Yuko Minaguchi, just like in the old anime.

Eriol you tease! So we finally got plot-relevant info and some SxS shipping (please DTR already!). What's not to love?

In the manga it was Eriol who materialized in front of Kero and Yue and not the other way around. Just an interesting tidbit.

Sakura using the Record to see her mom in the past renders the previous ep's use of Record somewhat moot.

≫Sakura using the Record to see her mom in the past renders the previous ep's use of Record somewhat moot.

Why? I don't get why this would be the case. The point of it's use in last episode was to show Sakura that it could be done. Now that she knows that it can be done, she chooses to do it in this moment. Makes absolute sense to me.

Also, CLAMP, and specifically Ohkawa Nanase is responsible for writing both the manga and the anime. So it makes sense that they might make changes to their own source material, the same way anyone would probably edit/rewrite a lot of what they say from years or even months ago.

≫The point of it's use in last episode was to show Sakura that it could be done. Now that she knows that it can be done, she chooses to do it in this moment.

Good point, it's just that in the manga (correct me if I'm wrong!) Sakura uses Record's powers the first time in this scene, so she must have realized its capabilities on her own accord and didn't need a 'Oh so this is how Record works' moment like in the previous episode.

≫Isn't CLAMP responsible for writing both the manga and the anime? If so, it makes sense that they might make changes to their own source material, the same way anyone would probably edit/rewrite a lot of what they say from months or even years ago.

I agree. On a side note I think the fox story is still somehow relevant to the plot in the future so there must've been a reason CLAMP devoted an entire episode on it.

if you recall from the fox story, the mother fox gave the young fox a warning about never showing humans "the other hand" and it kind of parallels with Nadeshiko warning Sakura to not go any further. The mother fox and child fox probably alludes to Nadeshiko and Sakura.

≫In the manga it was Eriol who materialized in front of Kero and Yue and not the other way around. Just an interesting tidbit.

I'm still kinda confused as to how that works... but it was pretty cool regardless.

Record is OP if Sakura can go back in time. @_@ Seems like she might get stuck there though.

It was very similar to The Return, when she got to view an over-time retelling of Toya and Ms.Mizuki's history and when she got to see the moments before Clow "died".

The difference there is she was also borrowing power from that tree IIRC. She's doing this on her own power.

DAMMIT DAMMIT DAMMIT. WHY DID IT END LIKE THAT?

Ok, I'm going to sleep. Wake me up in a week.

But seriously, that ending was just so intense, I need more right now. We didn't really get anything answered, but it seems like it's set up for us to get a lot of answers in the next episode or two.

I was totally expecting her mom to notice her at some point. We know her mom has been watching over everyone. I wonder if Li knows anything about that, based on the way he talked to Sakuras Great Grandfather.

The grandpa be like "You're not secretly a 20 year old perv are you?"

Totally unrelated to the plot, but Sakura and Kero's egg song reminded me of the cake song from Madoka... o_o

Nope. Not even close. The Cake Song is creepy and jarring (not a bad thing). This was just adorable.

Weird episode, but mirrored manga chapters almost scene for scene with some minor tweaks. I wonder when S+S will FINALLY DTR. So cute.

I’m getting super anxious to see chapter 24 animated. I think that it’ll be the season end.

Today's episode covers chapters 20-21 of the manga (the part where Kero and Yue talk with Eriol and where Masaki and Syaoran find a collapsed Sakura is from ch. 22 though) and there's 23 chapters out right now (ch 24 comes out next Friday) so we're pretty much caught up to where the manga is right now. Since each episode generally cover 2-3 chapters of the manga, the anime will be ahead of the manga starting from next week because it'll cover the rest of ch 22 plus ch 23 and maybe parts of ch 24. And then episode 22 will cover the remaining future chapters (note that the original anime also ended before the manga did so Clear Card's anime ending before the manga isn't unusual).

One difference between the anime and manga in this episode is that in the manga, Sakura reaches out to touch a sleeping child Nadeshiko and then Nadeshiko's spirit appears to her the 2nd time. The first time she appeared to her was in ch 19 but this was erased from the anime. I wish they had kept adult Nadeshiko because Sakura wonders "this isn't an illusion" before Nadeshiko tells her not to progress any further. But in the anime they had child Nadeshiko talk to her instead. Also, instead of Eriol materializing in front of Kero and Yue over the smartphone, he has them materialize in front of him instead.

And then episode 22 will cover the remaining future chapters

Has there been word that there will not be a S2? Because that sounds like an extremely rushed ending otherwise.

well as I said, each episode covers 2-3 chapters and next episode will cover the rest of ch 22 plus ch 23 and possibly ch 24, and episode 22 will cover ch. 25 to ch. 26 or 27 depending on however many chapters there'll be in total.

Like I said, that's not enough time to resolve everything that's going on without rushing it like hell. Off top of my head we have Kaito + Akiho + Bunny (who's literally done nothing so far btw, what's the point of even having her?) + Clear Cards, Sakura growing in power, Sakura Cards going blank, Li using Sakura Cards, Touya's magic returning and whatever he's planning to do with it. Probably some stuff I'm forgetting. Do you seriously think there can be a satisfying conclusion accounting for everything in just 2 episodes?

but we also don't need another 22 episodes for all of that. Also if you recall there originally was going to be 26 episodes but it got reduced to 22 episodes so Clamp and Madhouse must have something in mind if they decided to cut out 4 episodes to go from 26 episodes to 22.

So Akiho is either some kind of magical soul clone of Nadeshiko, or simply her reincarnation I guess. Or with the clock motif, maybe it's her soul pulled out of time, from before she gave birth to Sakura, perhaps even from her pre-Nadeshiko life?

Also wonder if Sakura's father would recognize her if he meets her. Tomoyo's mother probably would [edit: oh wait, she didn't]. Touya, once his powers return fully, would for sure.

"Why can I never despise the men who come to take such adorable girls away?" But he did despise Sakura's father for years.

Maybe he didn't really hate Sakura's father but had to show such a front.

Remember the guy was a teacher who was going out with his student, that sort of thing is looked down upon.

I think it’s more like he dismissed the relationship before he even met Sakura’s father. He said he got to meet him after Nadeshiko’s death and regretted preemptively judging him.

I've completely forgotten that Sakura and Tomoyo are 2nd cousins via their great grandpa. The whole inviting Syaoran along thing seems to be his way to assess Syaoran's suitability as a future great grandson-in-law. lol (He probably regretted not giving Sakura's dad a chance, which resulted in Nadeshiko leaving him)

Is it me or does Akiho resemble Nadeshiko somewhat, the hair colour particularly? Akiho is most likely a clone or reincarnation like Eriol is Clow's reincarnation.

Nadeshiko died when Sakura was 3 so if Akiho had been Nadeshiko's reincarnation she'd be 3 years younger than Sakura, not the same age. And none of the characters think Akiho looks like Nadeshiko. Sonomi didn't even bat an eye at her and she of all people knew what Nadeshiko looked like as a child.

Very nice episode. Still some low-budget animation here and there but at least we got plot advancement! The scene in Nadeshiko's room was just awesome.

Now for the useless brainstorming:
  • I wonder who exactly told Sakura she couldn't go back? The real Nadeshiko of the past couldn't see her. Is it the card?
  • Weirdly enough it's making reconsider everything about Akiho, haha. All that talk about getting stuck in the past and the Key of memories... Is Akiho a memory? A memory that's slowly fading and needs power to stay around?
  • I knew her family had something to do with it! "Book" collectors, but not just any book. A family of magicians, I guess, who would have loved to get the Clow book.
  • They also said Sakura's growing power is linked to Touya's growing power. How? Are they both getting stronger because of external forces or is Sakura just so powerful she unknowingly gives Touya some of her power? Is that what Touya's secret is about?
  • In any case it'll probably end up with Sakura giving Akiho a good portion of her power. If it's so incredible it won't matter much, she'll still be able to have her cards, etc.
Can't wait for next week!!

Man, I really hope we don't get an anime original ending.

I hope we get 70 episodes just like the original series.
